Filmkontakt Nord
(FkN) has since its establishment in 1991 by the independent Nordic short & documentary film community been dedicated to the advancement and promotion of Nordic short films and documentaries internationally.

The organization has four main objectives: information, marketing, networking and the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge and know-how. During FkN’s 19 years of activity, it has established itself as a unique central source of information and expertise, catering to the needs of the Nordic independent short film and documentary community and meeting the demands of the international marketplace.

FkN’s main function is to serve as a common Nordic platform for a stronger production and distribution network within the Nordic countries and a visible united exposure internationally, joining a strong cultural profile with a driven and future-oriented industrial perspective.

FkN’s activities and projects in 2010 were made possible thanks to the following financial sources: Nordic Council of Ministers (DKK 1.400.000), the Nordic national film institutions and ministries (DKK 1.374.000), Producers’ fees (DKK 470.000), MEDIA Promotion (DKK 458.000), Nordisk Film & TV Fond (NOK 95.000) and other (DKK 48.000). The total budget of Filmkontakt Nord 2010 was DKK 3.845.000.

The staff of FkN consists of: Karin Johansson-Mex (Managing Director), Katrine Kiilgaard (Head of Industry), Jing Haase (Nordisk Panorama Market Manager), Christina Jul Gregersen (Nordisk Forum Co-ordinator), Louise Christensen (Nordisk Forum Assistant), Amila Cirkinagic (Film Registration) and Alma Ducheyne (Financial Controller).

In 2010 Nordisk Panorama Market Online presented over 850 films. It is built to enhance the visibility of the Nordic films at the international market and will be promoted throughout the coming years at international film & TV markets and festivals. Nordisk Panorama Market Online is available to more than 800 international, professional buyers, festivals and sales agents registered at Filmkontakt Nord.

Nordisk Panorama Market Online is an integrated part of the FkN website, Nordic Portal. Nordic Portal offers a wide range of FkN’s services by providing key information on the Nordic short film and documentary sector such as Nordic films and professionals and Nordic/international industry events, thus fortifying FkN’s role as First Stop for Nordic Shorts & Docs.

Nordic Portal has more than 4.200 active users, and the frequency of sessions reaches over 46.000 sessions per month. The expansion of the Nordic Portal to include the FkN Contact Database and Nordisk Panorama Market Online has further increased the use of Nordic Portal by the Nordic and international film community.

During 2010, 262 new films were registered in the FkN Video Library and FkN Online Film Catalogue, which thus comprised a total of over 4.648 Nordic short films and documentaries produced since 1991. The Online Film Catalogue provides key information on all titles and at the FkN Video Library in Copenhagen preview copies of all films are available to visiting professionals. The FkN Video Library plays an important role not only in the promotion of new productions, but also in the long term marketing and reactivation of older titles which are of interest for thematic channels and distributors to the niche market.

During 2010 FkN was active at the international market events of Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival & Market, DOK Leipzig, MIP-TV/MIPDOC, Hot Docs, Sheffield Doc/Fest, IDFA, Worldwide Short Film Festival, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Sunny Side of the Doc, MIFA and Cinekid.

The city of Bergen in Norway hosted the 21st edition of Nordisk Panorama Event, the traveling triptych event, comprising Festival, Market and Co-financing Forum. Nordisk Panorama Event is the main platform for short films and documentaries in the Nordic region, offering an annual business venue and showcase, spanning all professional focus areas from development and financing to distribution and exhibition. Nordisk Panorama 2010 attracted 730 professionals from 21 countries.

Nordisk Panorama – 5 Cities Film Festival presented 121 films, 74 of which were competing in the three competition programs for the Nordic Awards for Best Short Film, Best Documentary and New Nordic Voices. The film screenings and the substantial seminar program highlighted for example alternative distribution models with the key-note speaker Peter Broderick and presented several award winning filmmakers from the Nordic region.

Nordisk Panorama Market offered a comprehensive overview of the year’s production of short films and documentaries from the Nordic countries, all 262 displayed on a digital platform fully appreciated by the attending 44 professionals - including TV-buyers, distributors and festival programmers who made effective use of the screening facilities with 643 screenings.

During the 17th Nordisk Forum for Co-financing of Documentaries, 28 projects were pitched to the 36 participating financiers. Nordisk Forum Online was offering a sneak preview of all projects with short trailers before the event. Nordisk Forum welcomed a total of 211 professionals from 13 countries. 382 meetings were booked during the event and for the first time ever Nordisk Forum broke the 1.000.000 Euro boundary for the over all turnover rate with some 80% of the projects either finished or in production within the following year.

Focus areas for 2010 include the international marketing of FkN’s new digital platform Nordisk Panorama Market Online, streaming the latest and the best of the Nordic short film and documentary production to the over 800 sales agents, distributors and festivals registered in the FkN database.

In 2011 over 1.000 films will be accessible globally at any time to the professional market representatives, all with the sole purpose to strengthen the worldwide distribution and visibility of Nordic short films and documentaries.

In close cooperation with Hot Docs Filmkontakt Nord is preparing for a new initiative in 2011, docXchange. docXchange invites North American and European producers working on an interactive documentary project to submit to the program, which will consist of a three-day workshop from 1 to 3 May at Hot Docs in Toronto and a one-day financing forum on 28 September at Nordisk Panorama in Aarhus, Denmark.
